Today is the official New Years Day bank holiday. I’m all for a paid Monday off. I could have easily spent the entire day on the couch binge watching The Mindy Project on Hulu. But eventually I trekked out of the house for a trip to the book store for the first book haul of the year.
Books-A-Million had a pretty good deal going: Buy 2, Get 1 Free on all bargain books. Honestly, I was going to be shopping in the bargain books section anyway. Here’s what I picked up this time around: 12 Years a Slave, Broken Prey, and Summer House With Swimming Pool.
12 Years A Slave by Solomon Northup
On about four different occasions, I have tried to watch 12 Years a Slave. Each time, I’m forced to turn the movie off about 5-7 minutes in. Just the opening scene alone get my emotions running high. I purchased the book to prepare myself for the movie. Hopefully understanding the story in its entirety will allow me to get through the emotionally charged portrayal of the story.
Broken Prey by John Sandford
I absolutely love the True Crime genre. Whether the dramatic story is told on Netfilx, TV, in a book, or podcast, I will be all in until the very end. If the storytellng in Broken Prey is compelling enough to make me want more, there are 15+ other “Prey” titles by Sandford. I may have just stumbled upon my next book collection!
Summer House with Swimming Pool by Herman Koch
The cover of this book is made to look like a doctor’s prescription pad with the title and author’s name written in red marker, or crayon, or maybe blood. Either way it was intriguing enough to catch my eye. Again, I am unfamiliar with the author, but decided to give Summer House a try anyway. The original price of $24.00 was marked way down, so if anything, I’m adding another hardcover to my book collection for less than 3 bucks.
Reading is FUNdamental, right?
One of my personal resolutions is to finally read the books on my shelf, and keep on adding to my library. I’d love to know what you’re reading. Do you have any reading goals for the year?
